Molybdenum pollution in groundwater is drawing increasing attention since high levels of molybdenum have been detected worldwide, including in the United States, China, and Mongolia. Although molybdenum is considered an essential element for all living organisms, exposure to high levels of molybdenum may result in disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and kidney. Thus, this study explored the possibility of molybdate removal in groundwater using wasted aerobic granular sludge (AGS) generated in the sewage treatment process. The results showed that AGS has an excellent theoretical adsorption capacity of 190.4 mg Mo/g at initial pH of 2.0. The molybdenum concentrations of up to 500 μg/L can be remediated to levels lower than the guideline value of 70 μg/L advised by the World Health Organization (WHO) at a granule dosage of 5 g/L. The color of granules changed from yellow to green and finally to a glaucous color when the amount of adsorbed molybdenum gradually increased to the maximum. This study suggested that wasted AGS can be an innovative material for efficient molybdate removal in groundwater with a visible endpoint for rapid detection in practical application.
