Bismuth-added stainless steels have been developed due to their good machinability, with excellent chip fragmentation property in particular, and their superior characteristics of forging. Bismuth has been reported to act as a surface active agent that lowers the surface tension of molten metal and thus refines the solidification structure of cast ingots. The effect of bismuth on the weld-ability of stainless steels is yet to be made clear. The effect of surface tension on the weld joint penetration shape of stainless steel in the case of gas tungsten arc welding has been extensively studied and clarified
