Thefirst marine pelagic copepod to be described was taken from the sea a little south of Hammerfest in northern Norway (Finmark) in 1767 and was calledMonoculus finmarchicusby its discoverer Gunnerus (1770), bishop of Nideros (Trondheim). His diagnosis is as follows:‘To theInsectaaptera finally belongs:MONOCULUS finmarchicus, annulis postice qvinqve; capite obtuso: pedum anteriorum qvatur; posteriorum vero qvinqve paribus: cauda recta, bifida.’
