RAMMELKAMP, DINGLE, WEAVER and WANNAMAKER, [thisBulletin, 1953, v. 28, 599 and 751] have shown that acute glomerulonephritis following streptococcal infections is largely confined to infections with group-A streptococci of type 12. This paper reports evidence of a similar association between nephritis and type-12 streptococci in England.Throat and nose swabs taken within 5 days of admission to hospital from patients with clinically typical acute glomerulonephritis were examined for haemo-lytic streptococci and all strains found were grouped and typed. Streptococci were obtained from 31 cases, and 28 (90 per cent.) of these were type 12. During this investigation, in the same hospitals, nose and throat swabs were taken from 19 patients admitted with acute rheumatism or anaphylactoid purpura. Group-A streptococci were isolated from 7 of these cases, and none of them was type 12. Only 8-2 per cent, of 1, 380 strains from the Public Health Laboratory Service type-distribution surveys were of type 12.John G. Goudie.
