It aroused considerable interest when some six years ago it was discovered that the major route of electrolyte excretion in marine birds is not the kidney but glands in the head, known as the nasal glands. Similar glands are found in marine reptiles, but since the anatomical origin is orbital in some reptiles while it is nasal in birds, we have found it desirable to stress the functional similarity of these glands by the use of terms such as “salt secreting glands”, or for simplicity, “salt glands”. The subject was reviewed in 1960 [56] and the present review therefore deals mostly with developments since that time.
