Plants require at least 14 essential macroand micronutrients. Of the macronutrients, the cationic potassium (K+), calcium (Ca 2+), and magnesium (Mg 2+) are required in large quantities and play distinct roles in plant growth and development. In the past decades, great progress has been made in identifying and characterizing the molecular components that are responsible for the uptake and distribution of these minerals and as such provides options to manipulate and optimize these processes. This chapter gives a detailed overview of the functions of K+, Ca 2+, and Mg2+ in plants, how they are taken up and distributed, and how genetic manipulation of specific systems may contribute to improved crop production.
