Herpesvirus simiae, or B virus, is a member of the herpes group of viruses that are enzootic in rhesus (Macaca mulatta), cynomolgus (M. fascicularis), and other Asiatic monkeys of the genus Macaca. The virus is found in the blood, secretions, and tissues of these monkeys. B virus is pathogenic in humans and can cause life-threatening central nervous system infections. This communication describes the finding of B virus contamination of primary rhesus monkey kidney (pMK) culture cells, and provides guidelines for the handling of pMK culture cells.
