The respiratory tract, being a major portal of entry of xenobiotics into the body, is exposed continuously to airborne environmental chemicals as well as to those substances which are present in the general circulation. One consequence of this exposure is that the different segments of this organ system, the nasal mucosa, trachea, and lung, represent major targets for chemically induced toxicity. On the basis of the pioneering studies of the Millers (1970, 1978, 198 1, 1982) and subsequent investigations by numerous other laboratories, it is now apparent, however, that most xenobiotics are not toxic per se. Rather, necrosis, mutagenesis, carcinogenesis, and other cytotoxicities seen after exposure to relatively inert xenobiotics generally are considered to be due to the formation of electrophilically reactive metabolites from these chemicals (Heidelberger, 1975; Mitchell et al., 1976; Boyd, 1980; Wright, 1980; Miller and Miller, 198 1, 1982; Boyd and Statham, 1983;
