Reproductive problems arising from industrial chemical exposures are not limited to pregnant women; both males and females at any time may be at risk. Few adequate epidemiological studies have been carried out but, to date, lead, methylmercury, beryllium, polychlorinated biphenyls, carbon monoxide, carbon disulphide, benzene, chlordecone, dibromochloropropane and hexachlorobenzene have been identified as hazardous to male and female reprduction in humans. In general, it is unusual for reproductive toxic effects to be observed at otherwise non-toxic doses. It seems likely that reproduction hazards from industrial chemicals will not be very common but, where they do occur, may be of great importance.
