Plate-like hematite particles of narrow size distribution were prepared by aging basic ferric salt solutions in the presence of EDTA and KNO3at elevated temperatures. Under the influence of the geomagnetic field these particles agglomerate flat on the cell surface. The orientation can be rapidly changed to an upright position by employing a perpendicular external magnetic field of moderate strength. The latter effect can be used to estimate the magnetization of the particles.
