This paper presents a simple method to measure the response time of a set of name servers from various locations around the world. The performance of the root servers is investigated by this method and compared with the country code top level domain(ccTLD) DNS servers. Our preliminary results obtained from 27 locations around the world identify regions under-served by the current root servers. The results also indicate that these regions are often connected better to US or Europe than to neighbor countries. We believe that larger scale measurement using this method will reveal a fairly-accurate picture of the current global DNS system.
