METHODSThe experiments were perlormed on adult cats anesthetized with intravenous a-chloralose (70 mg/kg). Th e results presented are based on 13 experiments, although a series of preliminary experiments provided additional support for the conclusions reached from these. The animals were curarized with gallamine triethiodide (Flaxedil) and artificially ventilated through a trachea1 cannula. The lumbosacral spinal cord was exposed by a Iaminectomy, and the left L,-S, ventral roots were cut. The left hindlimb was dissected from a dorsal approach, and the nerves supplying t-he posterior biceps femoris and semitendinosus muscles, the sural nerve, and branches of the tibia1 nerve supplying the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles were isolated and cut distally. The left greater splanchnic nerve was approached through an incision in the lumbodorsal. fascia, sectioned distally at the level of the diaphragm, and mounted in an in-
