Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) antigen is a tumor-associated protein. The expression of SCC antigen is closely related to cellular differentiation in both normal and malignant squamous cells, reflecting the infiltrative growth of tumor. More SCC antigen is released from squamous cell carcinoma cells than from normal squamous cells. Recently, a human SCC antigen cDNA was isolated and the amino acid homology search showed high homology with the serine protease inhibitor (serpins) family, including chicken gene Y protein (45%), plasminogen activator inhibitor-2 (PLAH2) (43%), ovalbumin (42%), and antithrombin III (39%). These results indicate that SCC antigen is a novel inhibitor, and it was postulated to act as a modulator of the host immune response against tumor cells. Here, we localized the SCC antigen gene by fluorescence in situ hybridization. 6 refs., 1 fig.
