Propionate is converted by the fasting rat into liver glycogen. Propionate labelled at the carboxyl carbon atom gives rise to glucose (from degraded glycogen) containing labelled carbon at C 3 and C 4. If the α- or β-carbon atom of the propionate is labelled, the resulting liver glycogen contains the labelled carbon at positions 1, 2, 5 and 6 in the glucose molecule. In view of the results obtained with labelled laetate (see preceding abst.), such a conversion suggests that pyruvate is an intermediary in the conversion of propionate to glycogen.-P. J. Heald.
