Polymorphonuclear leukocytes infiltrate tissues in response to an inflammatory stimulus to remove invading microorganisms and cell debris. These scavenging cells may have a role in the control of fluid efflux through the blood vessel wall which leads to tissue edema as studied in the rabbit.
