The articles discuss cross-cultural research in experimental social psychology. It focuses on three fundamental questions, which are the question of" cultural reality," the question of the" aim" of social psychology and the epistemological question of what constitutes a valid scientific approach in the social sciences and more particularly, in social psychology. The aim of this article is not to try to answer these three questions but to show how approaches applied by various researchers imply certain attitudes toward these questions which are either inconsistent or inadaptable and then to point out that difficulties encountered in cross-cultural research reflect a malaise characteristic of social sciences in general and of social psychology in particular.
