The HRS [Hamilton Rating Scale] was used as part of a comprehensive evaluation of depression in 153 medical in-patients. All the patients had some of the symptoms character -istic of depression as measured by the HRS. Although the scores did not agree with physicians'' provisional diagnoses, they correlated well with scores obtained on the Beck Depression Inventory and with other depressive criteria. Further, patients with psychiatric diagnoses other than depression had low scores on the HRS. Negroes, younger patients, and those with lower income tended to have high scores. The HRS provides information about depression in medical in-patients.
