Environment-induced cracking of two nickel base amorphous alloys, Ni-7Cr3Fe4.5Si3.2B and Ni13Cr 4.2Fe4.5Si2.8B, was investigated in 0.1 M H2SO4+ NaCl solutions by means of constant extension rate testing. Both alloys showed hydrogen embrittlement at cathodic potentials. Higher chromium content is beneficial to resistance to hydrogen embrittlement of the alloys. Under weak hydrogen charging conditions, the morphology of the fracture surface was vein-like, but under strong hydrogen charging conditions large areas of flat featureless cracking were observed, which suggests different cracking modes under different hydrogen charging conditions. At passive potentials, both alloys showed corrosion-assisted fracture. Chloride-induced local dissolution led to stress concentration and then to the initiation of cracks.
