IgM autoantibodies against the Fc fragment of IgG are found in the sera of 70-80% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, and have thus been termed rheumatoid factors (RF). However, patients with Sjogren’s syndrome and mixed cryoglobulinemia, as well as with a number of common infectious diseases, may also have abundant serum IgM anti-IgG autoantibodies. Transient synthesis of IgM-RF regularly accompanies secondary immune responses both in humans and animals (1-3). For these reasons, the designation of anti-IgG autoantibodies as rheumatoid factors is mainly of historical significance. Most investigations of RF have focused on the pathogenic role of the autoantibody in the formation of immune complexes and the resultant tissue damage. In recent years, several research groups have attempted to dlefine the molecular genetic factors that control RF synthesis and specificity. The goals of these experiments are to learn why anti-IgG autoantibodies are
