Am J Health-Syst Pharm. 1999; 56: 1535-9 iabetes mellitus is a serious medical and social problem that places a tremendous financial burden on patients and society. Approximately $90 billion is spent each year on the direct and indirect costs of diabetes. 1 Despite the importance and staggering cost of diabetes, medical management of this disease consistently falls short of treatment guidelines. 2-4Pharmacists can play an important role in controlling the costs of managing diabetes and its complications by participating in programs for monitoring therapeutic outcomes and educating patients. Community pharmacies may serve as diabetes care centers, offering both traditional and more sophisticated blood glucose monitoring products in addition to data management systems. In particular, pharmacists can educate patients about self-monitoring their blood glucose levels.
