Chitin or poly (N-acetyl-D-glucosamine) is a very interesting polysaccharide which can be formally considered a derivative of cellulose in which the hydroxy groups in positions 2 have been replaced by acetylamino groups. However, it is generally recognized that the different properties of chitin with respect to cellulose are not only due to the presence of the acetylamino group, but also due to its secondary structure'! Chitin is characterized by its insoluble and infusible properties, and hence the studies on it have not made remarkable advances. Recently, a patent for a preparative method of chitin films appeared2'. According to the patent, the chitin films were obtained by first casting films from chitosan, a deacetylated form of chitin, and subsequent acetylation. There seems, however, to be some difficulty about this procedure, since chitosan can be obtained only after drastic and complicated operations which may cause extensive decomposition of the polysaccharide'! In this paper, the formation of water-soluble chitin and new simple procedures for the preparation of chitin films are presented.
