Taking the Jiangsu tidal flat as an example and based on the field investigation on the tidal flat, the statistical analysis of spectral characteristics at typical sampling points was made and the discriminant functions of different ground objects were then established to distinguish between different ground objects on the tidal flat. Based on the discriminant analysis results, the spectral characteristics of different ground objects on the tidal flat were summarized, and the discriminating rule databank was establiched to support the identification of ground objects on the tidal flat. It is shown from the practical application that the remote sensing method can be used to quickly extract the tidal flat ground object informations from the landsat 7 ETM+ images.
