Hormonal steroids distributed in France for contraceptive use include synthetic estrogens obtained by modification of 17 beta estradiol and progestin derived from 19 nortestosterone. Methods of administration are: 1) the combined method which associates estrogen and progesterone during the whole cycle; 2) the sequential method with estrogen only administered during the first part of the cycle followed by estroprogestational administration during the second part; 3) the mini pill or administration of low dose progestin only; and 4) the discontinued progestational method or administration of estrogen in very high doses during the 48-72 hours following coitus. Estrogens inhibit follicle stimulating hormone secretion but not luteinizing hormone secretion atrophizes the endometrium and thickens cervical mucus.
