ON July 1st, 1935, Dr. H. MacCormac kindly sent three members of a family who were attending his Out-Patient Department at the Middlesex Hospital to see me. All three, a mother and her two sons, had large buUae, broken or with clear contents, situated on the soles and on the inner and outer sides of the feet. The bullse appeared only in warm weather, and caused a sensation of heat and discomfort. There were no scars, and rubbing the soles, sides and dorsum of the feet caused no fresh buUae to appear. The general health and physique of the patients were good. The hair, nails, teeth and mucous membranes were normal and there was no dermatographism. No excessive sweating of the feet or other parts of the body w^ as noticed, nor did the mother think it occurred. The mother, aged 33 years, said that she bruised rather easily, and that her two affected children bruised more readily than the normal one. She gave a history that the same condition had occurred in six and probably in seven members of the family in four successive generations, and that in all the affected members bullse had appeared only on the feet, and then only when the weather was w^ arm. The onset in all cases was between the age of 1 and 2 years. Her father, Lewis, is Welsh; her mother, Hammond, aged 54 years, II. 1, and her maternal grandfather, Leeson, II, are English and live in London. She is an only child; her mother's brother, II. 3, who had the same condition, died without issue in the Great War, and her mother's sister, II. 4, was normal and unmarried. She believes that her other brother, II. 2, had the condition, but she has lost touch with him. Her eldest son, aged 11 years, IV. 1, is normal, but her two other sons, aged 7 years and 2 years and 3 months respectively, IV. 2 and 3, both have the bullous eruption. Dr. MacCormac diagnosed the condition as epidermolysis bullosa, but it is a very atypical form. In epidermolysis bullosa simplex bullse appear on any part of the body as a result of trauma and occur at any
