Abstract This discussion of recent maser surveys in the southern sky will allow us to see the context of the new methanol multibeam survey, which is currently in progress and described elsewhere at this symposium. My emphasis will be on masers that arise in star-forming regions in the disc of our Galaxy. I discuss outcomes from existing surveys, and comparison of different maser species, with special attention to the recognition of blue-shifted outflows.
