The students and well-wishers of Prof GH Sawkar, formerly Head of the Department of Geology and Principal of the First Grade College, Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) have instituted an endowment fund in the year 2013 with the Geological Society of India. The objective of the endowment is to organize biannual seminar/training of 3 to 7 days duration for graduate/post graduate geology teachers selected from different institutions in India. The seminar/training is conducted by eminent experts including those from educational institutions, survey organizations and other scientific institutions and experts in mining industry. This exercise it is believed would go a long way in exposing the selected teaching community to modern methods of study in different branches of geology and in instilling awareness of practical approaches in dealing with aspects of geological sciences. Geology being an essentially a field science, the first training programme was conducted on “Field Techniques in Geological Mapping and Exploration” jointly with the GSI Training Institute at the Field Training Centre (FTC), Chitradurga from 4th to 10th June 2016. Based on the overwhelming response from the college teachers, the second course was also organised at above mentioned FTC, Chitradurga with the support from the Geological Survey of India Training Institute (GSITI) from 10th to 16th June 2018. In response to the announcement by the Geological Society of India and GSITI, more than 35 applications were received from different teaching institutions in India of which 25 participants were invited for participation in the training. While selecting the candidates, priority was given for teachers hailing from graduate colleges and those stationed in remote areas. Nineteen teachers finally participated in the programme-4 each from Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra, two each from Telengana and Goa; and one each from Tamil Nadu,
