Given the development of new techniques of event history analysis or failure time models this paper explains the logic behind these models in terms familiar to historical demographers. It provides practical guidance on the strengths and weaknesses of alternative models and standard statistical software. Event history analysis is 1st introduced followed by consideration for the generalization of life-table methodology to accommodate covariates. Next alternative specifications of failure time models are described followed by discussion of the analysis of concurrent process noninformative censoring unobserved heterogeneity and goodness of fit. An analysis of remarriage in Germany is presented which demonstrates the strength of these analytical techniques to deepen the understanding of past demographic behavior.
