This paper engages with the recent trend in organisation science towards understanding temporary organisations as a distinctive organisational form. The strategic management literature has so far failed to provide any viable explanations about how organisational temporariness and skills diversity coexist in projects. The distinctiveness of this organisational form has been previously attributed to its ‘temporariness’ or predetermined end. We challenge that assumption as far too simplistic and argue that organisational temporariness requires sources of permanence as a facilitator of collaborative actions. Further, we argue that temporary organisations in relation to their knowledge work represent a hybrid type of community which exhibits some characteristics of communities of practice and some of collectivities of practice. We define this specific kind of knowledge organisation as a community of collaborators by placing greater emphasis on the individualised rather than the shared communal knowledge in collaborative practices. Finally, the paper concludes that ‘temporariness’ and ‘permanence’ coexist through a process of collaborative improvisation which is a specific kind of knowledge work, far less predictable and imposing new challenges.
