Hamilton: An American Musical’s offbroadway premiere in February 2015 and the meteoric success that followed came at a heated political moment in the united States, when turmoil regarding race and immigration threatened once again to boil over.1 Plans for the offbroadway production of the nascent show unfolded amid a spate of highprofile police killings of African Americans and the emergence of the black lives matter movement as victims including eric Garner, michael brown, and tamir rice became both household names and rallying cries. rehearsals for the broadway production began the day after a mass shooting hate crime in the emanuel African methodist episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. the day of the 2016 tony Awards, when Hamilton won eleven awards, including best musical, saw another mass shooting, at a gay nightclub in orlando, Florida, on “latin night.” it was at that time the deadliest mass shooting in uS history, and the victims were mostly latinx.2 many in the united States had optimistically hoped that barack obama’s election would usher in a “postracial” period, but political scientist michael tesler has shown that politics instead became “more
