DISCUSSIONThe hexafluorobenzene molecule may be expected to consist of a flat regular hexagon of D6h symmetry. This molecular geometiy has been frequently discussed in connection with the benzene spectrum. 10 Here it suffices to repeat that there are twenty fundamental frequencies which are divided amongst the symmetry classes as indicated byThe selection rules for fundamentals allow the ulg (polarized), elg and qg frequencies to appear in the Raman effect and the a2,(parallel) and elu (perpendicular) in infra-red absorption. The remaining nine frequencies are forbidden in both spectra. The full summation selection rules have been given, ll and for the present the simple summations leading to infra-red active vibrations are the most relevant and are indicated in table 2.
