It has been found that the conversion of unhydroxylated microsomal-bound polypeptide to collagen requires a hydrogen donor, another nonenzymatic factor in the soluble protein fraction and microsomes. Ascorbate or 2-amino-4-hydroxydimethyl-pteridine can serve as the hydrogen donor. Proline hydroxylase appears to be located in the microsomal fraction.
