Food competition among catla (Catla catla), rohu (Labeo rohita), carp and silver barb was evaluated by stocking these species in the same pond. Also, fish growth and production performance was compared in the carp polyculture system with and without addition of silver barb. Results showed that silver barb competed with both native and exotic common carp for natural food. In semi-intensive polyculture with fertilizers and supplemental feed, silver barb had a synergistic effect on the growth and production of common carp without hampering the growth and production of catla and rohu. There was a significantly higher combined net yield (1793 kg/ha) achieved with four species, which was 25% higher than the net yield from three species without silver barb.
