THE SUCCESSFUL treatment of type I diabetes relies on the development of an accurate glucose sensor. To date, the most efficient glucose sensor is the pancreatic ß-cell. Therefore, the development of a suitable method for pancreatic islets transplantation is an important aim in the search for a cure for this disease. Several different bioartificial pancreas (BAP) devices have been used; 1 however, microencapsulated islets (MI) have additional advantages that make them a good candidate for the treatment of diabetes. Several materials have been used to microencapsulate islets. In this work, we evaluated the efficiency of polylactic-co-glycolide (PLGA) microcapsules as a BAP, and we compared its insulin yields with that of islets placed in diffusion chambers (DC) filled with agarose. We also evaluated the performance of MI on rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes.
