Kareiva and Shigesada (1983; Oecologia 56, 234) have indicated the need for models of animal movement lying between general diffusion models and simulations. They investigate one such model, but a variety of others are possible. We discuss three additional random walk models for animal movement. The models are divided into two classes, one in which step length and direction of movement are independent, the other in which they are not. Each class is further divided into two subclasses, "oriented models", in which the direction of each step is chosen relative to a fixed compass direction, and "unoriented models", in which direction is chosen relative to the preceding step. The difference between oriented and unoriented tracks is critical to the outcome of a movement episode, and a test procedure for distinguishing between the two is developed. The models are investigated both mathematically and by simulations.
