Deuterated (-)-Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabivarins dagger (Delta(9)-THCVs) can be used as markers for confirming the illicit use of marijuana. Here, we first describe an efficient synthesis of side chain deuterated Delta(9)-THCVs from the respective 5-propylresorcinols specifically deuterated at the side chain. Our approach involved the development of optimal, high yield methods for the introduction of deuterium at the C-3' and C-2' position of the side chain.
