For many environmental scientists, solid-phase extraction (SPE) does not appear as straightforward as liquid-liquid extraction because of the sorbent choices and because recoveries depend on sample volume. Marie-Claire Hennion and Valerie Pichon discuss how to determine various SPE parameters from liquid chromatography data, how to make sorbent choices, and the limits and advantages of several sorbents.
