Two groups of infants in Israel, 1 preterm and 1 full-term, were followed from birth until 3 mo. post-due-date in an attempt to determine at what age social smiling first appeared. When the age of onset of smiling was calculated in number of weeks from conception, the perterm and full-term infants both began to smile at .apprx. 44-45 wk. In terms of chronological age, the preterms began to respond socially in this way much later than the full-terms. Apparently, full allowance should be made for the number of weeks preterm a baby is born, when calculating the expected age for the appearance of social smiling. Unanticipated differences were found between 2 ethnic groups in the age of onset of smiling, which cut across the preterm-full-term dichotomy. Infants from Sephardi backgrounds began to smile significantly earlier than infants from Ashkenazi backgrounds regardless of whether they were preterm of full-term.
