In this issue ofChem Catalysis, Sytniczuk, Kajetanowicz, and Grela report on sterically tuned cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) ligands to protect the requisite Ru-methylidene ([Ru]=CH2) intermediate present during the ethenolysis of renewable fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs). Surprising structural characteristics of the Ru-CAAC complexes result in a turnover number of up to 740,000 and sub-ppm catalyst loadings.
