Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is characterized by multiple serological aberrations, including complement component depressions, many autoantibodies, and circulating and tissue deposited immune complexes (3, 20, 44). Abnormal serologic findings occur more frequently during periods of active disease, especially active nephritis (3, 7, 11, 15, 16, 22, 23, 39, 40, 42, 44). These abnormal test results have been noted to normalize in association with improvement of clinical activity. There are, however, few studies that address the question of changing qualitative and quantitative serological parameters during evolving clinical exacerbations. The purpose of this study is to examine which serologic parameters among complement, anti-bodies to dsDNA (ADA) and immune complex levels correlated best with the development of ac-tive renal and non-renal exacerbations and the time course of these changes.
