Sleep problems are a common symptom of childhood anxiety disorders, and can also exacerbate symptoms of daytime anxiety. Despite evidence for the role of early sleep disturbance in the development and maintenance of anxiety, research examining the bidirectional relationships underlying these childhood problems is only beginning to emerge. Likewise, intervention components for sleep and anxiety in youth overlap considerably, yet systematic investigation of combined outcomes is rare. This article reviews available sleep-focused research in clinically anxious children and highlights several modifiable targets for early intervention, and presents a newly developed combined intervention for anxiety and sleep in school-aged children.
