Delineated within this issue of the Annals of Biomedical Engineering are the fruits of the Physiome Symposium—Integrated Biology of the Heart—convened in Seattle, Washington on 9–11 September 2000. The symposium was designed to elucidate the spectacular successes of modern quantitative methods in integrating the biology of the heart. Enabling technologies such as high-speed digital computation methods and imaging are opening scientific doors to shed new light on important physiological questions. The scientific matrix spans from micro-to macroscales and functionally from electrophysiology to biomechanics to transport processes to energetics. The results of the symposium set the stage for the future challenge presented by the ‘‘Physiome’’of the heart. The papers in the symposium highlight the essential use of the physical sciences in creating mathematical models to interpret physiological phenomena. From the breadth of work presented at the meeting, it is very clear that the process of doing integrative biology is very quantitative. The Physiome is the quantitative description of the structure and function of the intact organism. Complicated it is, but, with high-speed digital computational resources, the development of easy to access databases and the Internet, the future of the Physiome project is bright.
