Regardless of the theoretical approach one finds most uselid in understanding the historical, social, and cultural significance of sport, the theoretical, methodological, and practical contributions made through feminist informed analyses cannot be denied. From'Fair Sex'to Feminism is an edited volume that contributes to this feminist project. Feminist approaches, however, have not developed monolithically, nor has feminism developed as an orthodoxy. Since its introduction in the early 1970s, feminism has remained in an ongoing process of development, continuously moving beyond what at one moment seems to be terminal theoretical strengths. Perhaps stated too simplistically, we could say that feminism has moved from early attempts to recover" women"(understood as a universal and homogeneous concept) and typically related essentialist approaches to reconsiderations of the concept and constructs of women as problematic (highlighting differences) and often related anti-essentialist, social constructionist approaches. In terms of its feminist approach, From'Fair Sex'to Feminism is situated between a large body of texts that share the most recognizable feminist project of recovering women as a necessary corrective to the absence of women intheory and history and, although to a lesser extent, a smaller body of texts that have begun the attempt to illuminate the social and cultural processes of the reproduction of gender relations. Additionally, the book contributes to narrowing the gap between sport, which has increasingly become accepted and understood as an important social practice and legitimate topic of academic inquiry, and those topics which have traditionally been considered" serious social history." The book contains 12 articles heavily oriented toward 19th and 20th century Britain and the United States. Primarily, the articles are reprints dating from 1973 through 1985, and like most anthologies, the contributions of the articles is uneven. The anthology is divided into four sections: the first provides an overview of the topics covered in the book by comparing femininity in Britain and the US while the following three sections are differentiated by geographical emphasis (Britain, broader Commonwealth countries, and the US). AU of the articles share a concern with the matrix of social institutions that have historically shaped, fashioned, and controlled women's bodies in ways that have tended to legitimate and reproduce women's subordinate position. The book focuses on the
