Gastroesophageal (GE) reflux occurs frequently enough to be considered an important sleep-related dysfunction, the cause of which has not been sufficiently elucidated. Attention has been directed to at least two components, that of an incompetent lower esophageal sphincter and second an inability to clear refluxed material quickly. The symptoms of heartburn, acid taste in mouth, pain in lower chest and/or upper abdomen, and disturbance of sleep are often difficult to differentiate from other sleep-associated disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), sleep-related asthma, paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea, and abnormal swallowing syndrome with which GE reflux may be concomitantly associated
