Ethnic tourism is defined as that form of tourism where the cultural exoticism of natives is the main tourist attractant. It involves complex ethnic relations and a division of labor among three groups: tourists, tourees (natives who, literally, make a spectacle of themselves), and middlemen (who mediate tourist-touree encounters and provide catering facilities). The Mexican town of San Cristóbal in the Chiapas Highlands has increasingly become, over the last 30 years, a major center of ethnic tourism, involving North American, European, Japanese, and Mexican tourists, mostly localladinomiddlemen, and several indigenous Maya groups. The study describes the ethnic division of labor developed around tourism in San Cristóbal and the impact of tourism on ethnic relations.
