Since the earliest days of written medical history, medical knowledge has been conveyed through the writing of “herbals,” which, simply defined, refer to books containing the names, descriptions, and medical virtues of plants. Although the term did not come into use until the beginning of the sixteenth century, medical botany works had been produced in ancient Egypt, Sumeria, and China. One of the earliest of these is the Papyrus Ebers, which is dated to about 1550 BC but was thought to have originated 5–25 centuries earlier. More than simply providing a record of medicinal plant use, the herbals, because of their immense importance to physicians and merchants, were among the most important works to be put into print and provide a literal history of printing itself.Of the ancient herbals, one stands out among all others as the most influential of medical works and remained the authoritative source of pharmacy from its origin in the first century AD to 1500 years later—De Materia Medica of Greek physician and herbalist Pedanios
