A large body of data has accumulated providing some insights into the way hypertension evolves in the general population and some clues to possible environmental determinants. A prominent genetic susceptibility has been repeatedly demonstrated, but in those so predisposed, environmental factors appear to exert a considerable influence. Together, these multiple environmental influences in genetically susceptible persons determine the level of blood pressure ultimately attained in adult life. Although it is now possible to control most of the hypertension encountered in the general population, its high prevalence makes primary prevention by avoidance or correction of predisposing factors the more desirable approach.
