The efficiency of echo reduction due to the coating of a rigid plane structure by a properly designed material can be determined via the measurement of the reflection and transmission coefficients of a panel made up with this material using a simple, plane‐wave type relation. However, the validity of this relation is questionable in the case of Alberich anechoic coatings, due to the presence of the periodic inclusions. Using a previously described finite element model [A. C. Hladky‐Hennion and J. N. Decarpigny, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 90, 3356–3367 (1991)], this paper shows that the corresponding discrepancies are of minor importance, especially if the material losses are high.
