Plaque samples of 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 days of age were obtained from the labial surfaces of the upper and lower incisor teeth of 6 subjects. These samples were assayed for their content of Neisseria, Nocardia, Streptococcus, Fusobacterium, Veillonella, Actinomyces, and Corynebacterium. During the early stages of plaque formation, streptococci, neisseriae and nocardiae appeared to predominant while, after 9 days, streptococci, actinomyces, veillonellae and corynebacteria predominanted. Growth of anaerobic organisms such as veillonellae and fusobacteria was dependent upon prior growth of aerobic and facultative organisms with a resultant increase in plaque thickness yielding conditions suitable for anaerobic growth.
