THE METHOD of dating the separation of cognate languages on the basis of the percentage of common basic vocabulary was inspired by radiocarbon-dating of organic matter, and was based upon the alleged discovery of" the fact that fundamental vocabulary changes at a constant rate"(Swadesh 1952). The" constant" rate of retention per millenium was originally determined as about 81%, using a list of 215 items and their equivalents in a dozen languages (Swadesh 1952; Lees 1953). Later, the list was reduced to 200 (Swadesh 1952) and then 100 items (Swadesh 1955), and has been submitted to various experiments by other scholars. In his survey," Lexicostatistics So Far," Hymes comments upon such factors of change in basic vocabulary as borrowing and word-taboo, and holds that," No matter how high the rate for any one factor, if the cu-HANS VOGT, Professor of Romance Philology at the University of Oslo, was born in 1903. He studied classics, Romance languages, comparative Indo-European, and general linguistics at the University of Oslo. His first publications dealt mostly with Old Armenian, which he studied in Paris in 1929-31. After a prolonged stay in Tiflis (1932-33) he has been mainly concerned with Caucasian languages, especially Georgian, Old and Modern. He studied anthropology and American Indian languages at Yale in 1937-38, and did field-work among the Kalispel Indians. His interest in general linguistics has resulted in contributions to the phonemics and the morphology of various other languages, such as Norwegian, Burushaski, Ossete, and Basque.
