The Oscar-winning animated feature film Up is a story of losing and rediscovering a life of adventure. The movie tells the story of Carl Fredricksen. As a child Carl is fascinated with the adventurer Charles Muntz. When Carl meets a fellow Muntz fan named Ellie they hit it off immediately. Together, the two dream of one day visiting Paradise Falls in South America to follow in their hero’s footsteps. The movie quickly follows Carl and Ellie from childhood through adulthood by showing snapshots of their life together. Pictures of life fill the screen: first marriage, then buying a house, followed by the image of their jar for saving money for adventures. The montage shows Carl and Ellie breaking into their adventure jar each time life takes a turn for the worse—when the car breaks down or the roof needs to be fixed. Carl delights in Ellie’s energy and zest for life. The two work hard and create a happy home together, supporting each other through infertility and always dreaming of Paradise Falls. The final pictures show Ellie passing away leaving Carl with unused plane tickets to South America. Happy scenes fade away and the movie picks up with Carl as a bitter old man fighting off developers who want to build over his home. Carl holds onto the house and Ellie’s memory with ferocious tenacity. When he is told he must move to a retirement home and leave his house behind Carl
